As the parent of two boys on the autism spectrum, making sure they’re in a comfortable environment is one of my top priorities. When I found out that my son was being bullied by his peers in his brick-and-mortar school, I knew that something had to change. I couldn’t knowingly send him off to such a stressful environment each day. Fortunately, I came across the Cyber Academy of South Carolina, an online public school that allows my boys to attend their classes at home.
The social stresses they previously faced are now gone in online school. Without distractions in the classroom, they’re unlocking their full potential. For example, (my son) earned high school credits in English and algebra while he was still in middle school – an accomplishment we never could’ve imagined. Online school is also providing my sons with a support system that gives them the one-on-one attention they need to make sure they can continue to grow.
April is Autism Awareness Month. For parents with children on the autism spectrum and considering alternative education options, I encourage them to consider online learning. It has truly been the perfect formula for my family, and now I can’t imagine seeking academic support for my kids in any other way.
