Hillsboro resident Claire Williams was 15 when her father suddenly passed away, exacerbating her physical condition and making it impossible to maintain the curriculum schedule in public school.
The now 17-year-old Williams lives with autoimmune disorder. The condition requires diligent treatment and proper management of the episodes themselves.
Of the symptoms themselves, Claire says that when her body shuts down, it becomes difficult to do anything physical, even basic movements. Claire attended Hillsboro ISD before the symptoms fully manifested and tragedy left her a full year behind her grade level even as her condition escalated.
Her brick-and-mortar school couldn’t help her graduate less than two years behind schedule, and she was concerned about her medical limitations. As a result, she enrolled with Texas Virtual Academy at Hallsville (TVAH), a tuition-free online public school from Hallsville Independent School District.
